Back to the Basics

Getting back to the basics means returning to a base or a fundamental: the place that is your command center; the place from which everything flows.

Basic is simple. It is comfortable. It feels right. If you're like me, you're much more productive in your basics.

What is your base? Who is your base?

So often, we overcomplicate things. We are hard on ourselves. We feel overwhelmed, and we lose focus.

When you start to feel like life is getting out of control, get back to the basics.

I love the scripture in Hebrews that describes the hope we have in Jesus as an anchor for our souls (Hebrews 6:19). An anchor is a place that brings stability and safety. When your mind and emotions want to take you onto the waves of unbelief, fear, and double-mindedness (James 1), you need to anchor back into the unchanging nature of who God is.

Let Him remind you of your simple yet magnificent purpose--to love and glorify Him with all of your heart, all of your mind, and all of your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself.

Love God, and love people. That is basic.

Life is busy and the world is crazy-it always will be--but only the things built on the foundation of Jesus will count in eternity. The chaos that demands so much of you will produce nothing but more frustration and more chaos. When flowing from the right foundation, your life will produce fruit effortlessly. When your base is in Jesus, you have a foundation to come back to. No matter how crazy your day was or how you may feel, He is constant. He is a solid foundation who will never leave you or forsake you. He will take your burdens and replace them with inexpressible joy!

"For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, 'Don't be afraid. I am here to help you." Isaiah 41:13

The next time you are feeling overwhelmed, get back to the basics! Don't make spending time with the Lord another chore. Know that He is there to help you! Trade chaos for comfort in the Lord's presence where you are refreshed and reminded of Who is your foundation and your anchor.

Remember that the goal is basic--to love God and impact your world one person at a time!
