Help! I'm Unequally Yolked

What does the Bible mean when it talks about being unequally yoked?

To understand this concept, you have to think about what a yolk does. A yolk is used to tie two oxen together so they can pull a plow. If one animal is stronger than the other, they are not efficient and the weaker animal will cause the other animal to move slower.

In our relationships as Christians, we need to be equally yolked with other people so that we can move forward in our relationship with God! Of course, being friends with unbelievers is not wrong. But we do need to be careful about who we allow to influence us.

If you are already married to someone who is not a Christian, the Bible tells you to:

  1. Live peacefully with them.

  2. Be submissive to them.

  3. Honor and respect them, even when they do not deserve it.

As you do these things, the Bible says that your husband will be won to Christ because of you! Consistently pray for him and prophecy that he will be a man of God and a strong leader of your home.

If you are a single person:

  1. Have high standards.

  2. Pray and thank God for your future spouse.

  3. Focus on creating friendships that push you forward in your life and relationship with God.

If you are currently married to someone who is not saved, pray this: God, thank you for my spouse. I thank you that you created them for a relationship with you. Help me to show them who You are through my actions. Help me to be gentle and kind. Give me wisdom when we disagree so that I can honor him and you. I pray that he is saved quickly and that he begins to live as the man you called him to be, in Jesus’ name, amen!
