Should Christians Celebrate Halloween?

RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE:

  • Deuteronomy 18: 9-13

SHOW NOTES:

This time of year, many Christians debate whether or not we should participate in Halloween including trick or treating and dressing up.

When looking at this controversial topic, a good place to start is orthodoxy or the things we believe. As you develop traditions and the overall culture of your home, it’s important that you clearly define your family’s orthodoxy and how you interpret God’s Word. Then, you’ll be able to define how your family views October 31 based on your belief system and interpretation of scripture.

Because your beliefs should be consistent in every aspect of your life, your orthodoxy must follow suit. Otherwise, you’ll make your belief systems around what you prefer versus what you believe.

Personally, our family believes that every day on the calendar is the Lord’s. He has redeemed the entire calendar, so there’s not one day we are devoting to the devil. Our participation in Halloween does not include engaging in evil things. When you’re not engaging in darkness, you avoid giving the enemy a path or a doorway into your home in those areas.

As Christians, we view Halloween as an opportunity to be the light. We are not afraid of the darkness; we are called to expel the darkness because we are the light in the world. Halloween is another opportunity to share the gospel. Our family does not consider Halloween as the devil’s day because each day belongs to the Lord.

To know where your conviction lies as a parent, pray through if you feel your children should participate in Halloween activities. Use discernment of what you perceive as evil versus good. Whether you choose to partake in Halloween is completely up to you! Do not condemn other people who believe differently. Instead, know what you believe, why you believe it, and how it translates to every area of your life. Then, apply it—living out your orthodoxy in your day-to-day life.
