Be Calm, Momma

If you’re a mom, the time has come that you’ve either been counting down the days in excitement for or dreading as it drew near. For me, my oldest baby is going to 1st grade. While I don’t have years of advice or experience in this department, I can be alongside you in all of the feelings!

Does anyone else feel like the summer went by in the blink of an eye and spent the last few weeks trying to cram in all the “summer activities”? Or maybe you are all summered out, have been all the places and done all the things. If you’re like me, you are simultaneously crying over the thought of your baby going to school all day, but also looking forward to routine and possibly less sibling rivalry during the day.

I recently saw a statistic that said children spend over 1,000 hours in school during the school year. All the feelings hit me; thinking about missing 1,000 hours of time with him, wondering if his peers will be kind to him or more importantly—if he’s going to be kind to them, is he safe, is he learning, is he having fun, will he love being there, will it be a fight at 7 am every day… just ALL the thoughts!

After coming down from my spiral, calming my thoughts, and allowing the Lord to speak to my heart, the most perfect verse was brought to me.

“The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” – Psalm 121:5-8

As this new school year begins, we will be entrusting our children with bus drivers, teachers, coaches, and more— but the more important trust we need to have is in the Lord. He will be with them in all the places we aren’t (and even the ones we are).

Here are some prayer points that I have been using to calm my momma nerves and put my trust and faith in God for this school year:

  • For their protection and safety (Psalm 121:5-8, 2 Thessalonians 3:3)

  • Holy Spirit will guide their steps, tongues, and mind to be loving, kind, & respectful (1 Corinthians 13:4–6, Colossians 3:12, Ephesians 4:31–32)

  • They will not only learn but grow wise (Daniel 1:17, Philippians 4:9, Psalms 32:8)

  • To be confident and bold (Deuteronomy 31:6, Isaiah 41:10)

I am believing for a wonderful school year for all of our children and for our momma hearts to be at peace and be present in these special times with our babies!
